ERP systems have been at the heart of business operations for decades. They provide structure, trusted data and control across areas such as finance, procurement, sales and operations.

AI is not making that role less important. It is changing what businesses expect from ERP.

As AI agents become more capable, organisations are beginning to rethink how people interact with enterprise systems. Instead of using ERP mainly to enter transactions, run reports and follow predefined workflows, a new model is emerging. AI agents can help interpret information, identify priorities and initiate actions across connected processes.

The opportunity is significant, but it does not mean replacing the ERP core.

ERP remains essential because it provides the trusted data, rules, auditability and business context that AI needs. Financial accounting, compliance and other controlled processes still require consistency. AI can work with this foundation, but it cannot replace the need for reliable business data.

The change is happening around that core.

A more modern ERP environment can combine a stable foundation with a flexible layer of applications, integrations and AI agents. APIs allow information to move between systems. AI agents can access relevant data and support employees without changing the underlying controls that keep the business running.

This creates new possibilities for everyday work.

Consider sales order management. Information may arrive in different formats and require manual entry or reconciliation. AI agents can help collect that information, interpret it and initiate the appropriate workflow.

Accounts receivable offers another example. Finance teams often spend considerable time gathering data, analysing outstanding balances and deciding which actions should take priority. AI can support this work by bringing information together, identifying areas that need attention and helping teams act sooner.

Planning can also become more responsive. AI can analyse financial, operational and historical information more quickly, helping organisations identify patterns and improve forecasts.

The value goes beyond saving time.

When routine interactions with ERP become simpler, employees can spend more time on decisions, exceptions and activities that require judgement. Information also becomes easier to access, helping different parts of the organisation work from a clearer view of what is happening.

There is, however, an important balance to maintain.

Adding AI without considering architecture, governance and data quality can create more complexity. A modern approach needs to protect the trusted ERP core while allowing innovation around it. It also needs clear controls over how agents access information and what actions they can take.

This is why ERP modernisation is likely to be gradual. Organisations can start with specific processes where AI can create clear value, build confidence and expand from there.

The future of ERP is therefore not about choosing between established enterprise systems and AI. It is about bringing the two together in a way that combines control with greater flexibility and intelligence.
