Digital transformation has become an increasingly vital aspect of any company’s development over the last few decades. Business digitalisation can be a complex process and there are many facets to it. With technology changing at a rapid pace, it can sometimes feel overwhelming trying to keep up with all the new developments, but in our modern world it’s something we all must do, and by making the right choices, your digital transformation journey can be stress-free and bring huge benefits to your business.

IDC figures state that digital transformation investment is predicted to reach $7 trillion dollars from 2020 to 2023, with the digital transformation market size growing annually by 19.1% to 2026. In addition, IDC asserts that AI technology will become a part of the processes and products of a minimum of 90% of new enterprise apps by 2025. Where is your business on the journey to digital maturity? Are you ahead of the crowd, or lagging behind?

The stages of Digital Maturity

Let us first take a look at the four stages of digital maturity.

Awareness – Your business is conscious of the digital world, its benefits, and the problems it can pose to your company, but you have yet to take this on board and integrate digital strategies into your business.

Adoption – You begin to embrace digital processes. You’re using your newly implemented systems and processes to their full and you’re seeing positive results.

Transformation – Your business is now transformed, you’ve made significant positive changes and digital processes are now an integral part of your business.

Leadership – You’ve forged a path to the front and are now a leader in the digital world. You are innovating, constantly moving forward, and taking on board the latest technologies.

Digital Maturity – A checklist for businesses

It’s important to know where you are on the path to full digital maturity. Here are some points to discuss, to help your business assess its current level of digital maturity and define goals for moving forward.

Decide what digital maturity means to you

What is the definition of digital maturity with regard to your specific organisation? What are your focus points, what do you most want to get out of your digital transformation?

Assess your business processes

Closely inspect your current business process and look for positive digital integration options. Could digital implementations help make the process more efficient, save time, or reduce error?

Take a look at your current setup

It’s likely you already have some level of digitisation within your business. What works for you? What needs improvement? Can this serve as a base or does it need an entire overhaul?

Focus on security

With digital transformation comes increased security threats. Are your systems sufficiently protected and are you taking the right steps to protect your customer’s data and comply with data protection regulations?

Take a look at your competitors

Check out your competitors. What solutions and technologies have they implemented? How are their digital solutions working for them?

Pay attention to the customer journey

What do customers think about dealing with your business? Is straightforward for them? What is missing? How could it be better with digital solutions?

Check that your staff members are onboard

Are your employees embracing new technologies or are they reluctant to make changes? Is further training needed to get the most from your digital solutions?

Look at your innovation timeline

Are you moving forward on a regular basis? Digital transformation isn’t a ‘one and done’ installation, it’s an ongoing process. Are you keeping ahead and constantly looking for ways to improve?

Set goals

Make goals, define them, and follow them up. Reassess often to ensure you’re on track. Get external expert help where needed to ensure you make the right choices.
